Have you ever wondered, “what is the veganism meaning in Hindi” or pondered what vegan means culturally in India? Veganism has a clear connotation and association in the United States. People think of veganism as both a form of activism and as a healthy lifestyle choice. More than just a way of eating, veganism is a culture. Vegans have a strong connection to their practices which bonds them closely to one another.

What is Veganism?

Veganism is a popular lifestyle choice that is growing in popularity around the world, especially in India. It is a dietary and lifestyle choice that involves abstaining from all animal-based products and by-products such as meat, dairy, eggs, wool, and fur.

Veganism Meaning in Hindi?

Although veganism has only recently become popular in the western world, it has deep roots in India. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at:

  • the history of veganism in India
  • the meaning of veganism in Hindi
  • how popular being vegan is in India.

Vegan Meaning in Hindi Language

The term veganism has been translated into Hindi as satvika ahimsa. Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word that stands for nonviolence and compassion towards all living creatures.

In this context, veganism is a lifestyle choice that promotes ahimsa and abstains from all animal-based products and by-products. In India, veganism has strong cultural implications as it is closely aligned with traditional Indian values of ahimsa and compassion.

In Hindi the word for vegan is शाकाहारी (shakahari). This phrase comes from two Sanskrit words – शाक (shaka) “vegetable” and आहार (ahara) meaning “food”. When put together these two words describe a person they describe a person who eats plant based food and avoids animal meat and byproducts.

How Popular is Veganism In India?

When I first read the statistics I couldn’t believe how popular veganism is in India. I am familiar with Indian dietary practices because I took Ayurvedic cooking classes at the Natural Gourmet Institute where I became a chef. But I didn’t realize how many vegans there are! Take a look at these 2022 statistics:

  • 24% of the Indian population are vegan
  • 574 million Indians follow a meat-free diet
  • India has the highest number of vegans in the world

Why Are So Many Indians Vegan?

A westerner is typically motivated to take on a vegan lifestyle for environmental, ethical and health reasons. All of these motivators are modern concerns spurred on by problems that arise in first world countries. The raise in obesity and cancer has motivated lots of Americans to go vegan.

In addition to that people go vegan to help conserve the environment. Meat production places a lot of stress on the limited water and farmland resources available to grow food. Many people realize that it is less cost effective to raise animals for food than it is to grow crops.

Hindi Veganism Stems from Religion and Long Standing Cultural Norms

Indian culture is so different from Western culture. So naturally their motivation to be vegan is completely different. I think it’s fair to say that Eastern culture in India is responsible for the start of veganism. Indians were practicing veganism long before pollution or diseases of accumulation were an issue.

Meatless Lifestyles Promoted By Hinduism, Jainism and Islam

India’s dietary trends have been influenced by cultural norms and religion. All of the major religious groups in India (apart from Christians) promote a vegetarian lifestyle. Hinduism greatly discourages the consumption of beef and is by far the most popular religion in India. According to 2022 statistics there are 1 billion people who practice Hinduism in India!

Islam and Jainism, the two other popular religions in India also limit meat consumption. Like Judaism, Islam restricts the consumption of pork because it is considered unclean. Jainism promotes an entirely vegetarian lifestyle.

What Are Popular Vegan and Vegetarian Meals in Hindi Culture?

  • Chana Masala: A delicious and flavorful dish made from chickpeas and spices.
  • Saag: A creamy spinach dish made with spices and served with chapati.
  • Aloo Gobi: A dish made with potatoes, cauliflower, and spices.
  • Dhokla: A savory and fluffy snack made from chickpea flour.
  • Pani Puri: A popular street food snack made from puri shells filled with flavored water. 6. Paneer Makhani: A creamy dish made with paneer and tomatoes.
  • Kofta: A vegetarian dumpling made with potatoes, peas, and spices.
  • Vegetable Biryani: A flavorful rice dish made with spices and vegetables.
  • Palak Paneer: A creamy dish made with spinach and paneer.
  • Samosa: A savory snack made with potatoes and spices, wrapped in a flaky pastry.

Is a Sattvic Diet the Same as Vegan?

No a Sattvic diet is a pure vegetarian diet since dairy products not made from animal rennet are allowed. On a vegan diet zero animal products are consumed. So the main difference is that a Sattvic diet allows dairy while a vegan diet does not.

To Wrap Things Up…

Veganism meaning in Hindi is an interesting topic. This blog post just scratches the surface of the cultural and religious norms that generated the popular notion of veganism we know today,
