Why Use Baby Red Skin Potatoes?

Red skinned potatoes are perfect for air frying. Their skin is thin and crisps up nicely in the air fryer. I like the baby ones because they’re more tender and easier to cook. Since they’re small you don’t have to cut them! If you want to cut them you can.

I also like using red skin potatoes because they are one of the only types of potato with edible skin. So you don’t have to peel them. That’s why I call these “lazy” air fryer red skinned potatoes!

Ingredient Substitutions For Air Fryer Red Skin Potatoes

  • Baby Red Skin Potatoes: If you don’t have baby red potatoes you can use full sized red potatoes instead. You’ll just need to cut them into 1 inch chunks before you air fry them. If you don’t have red potatoes you can use regular potatoes just make sure you peel them. Some other types of potatoes you don’t have to peel include Yukon Gold, French Fingerling, Creamers, Red Bliss, Red Adirondack and Russian Potatoes.
  • Rosemary: If you don’t have fresh rosemary on hand you can use 1 tbsp of dried rosemary instead.
  • Chives: Chives add a delicate onion flavor to the potatoes. If you don’t have chives you can use thinly sliced shallots or caramelized onions.

I made this recipe so simple because I wanted it to be a base for you to use when air frying red potatoes. You can always add more ingredients and make this basic recipe more elaborate to suit your tastebuds!

I chose red potatoes for this recipe because you don’t have to peel them. Here are some other types of potatoes you can use instead that also don’t require peeling. I did type this out in the recipe substitution section above but I think it’s important and so it deserves a section of it’s own.

How to Make Air Fryer Red Potatoes at Home

  1. Soak the potatoes in a bowl of water for 20 minutes.
  2. Massage the red potatoes with olive oil. Combine with chopped chives, salt, pepper and rosemary.
  3. Place the potatoes in an air fryer basket at 425 degrees for 25 minutes.
  4. Remove from the air fryer and enjoy.

Tips to Make Great Red Skin Potatoes in the Air Fryer

  • Use tinfoil on the bottom of your air fryer to avoid a greasy mess.
  • Make sure to coat all of the potatoes in oil by massaging them.
  • Also rub all of the fresh herbs with oil so that they don’t burn.
  • For crispier potatoes soak them in water before cooking them. Then make sure they are fully dry before seasoning them with oil. If the potatoes are still wet the oil won’t stick and they’ll burn.

How Long Should I Cook Red Potatoes in the Air Fryer?

At 400 degrees you should cook red potatoes for 20-25 minutes until you reach your desired crispiness. After 20 minutes has passed make sure to check the potatoes every few minutes to make sure that you don’t over cook them.

Keep in mind that if you have enough oil on the potatoes chances are they won’t burn fast. They’ll just get more and more dehydrated and crispy. If you use a reasonable amount of time which is less than 27 minutes.

Red potatoes are a variety of potatoes known as Red Bless or Red Skinned Potatoes. These potatoes are one of the waxiest varieties out there.

This means that you don’t have to peel them before you cook them. They retain their shape even after you cook them. And the skin crisps up nicely.

Also the skin is edible so you can leave it on when you fry them. The skin fries up nicely and ads a bit of extra crispiness to the finished product.

You can fry sweet potatoes, or regular potatoes but you would need to peel the skin first since it isn’t edible. I would say that red potatoes are the easiest kind of potato to fry.

Air fryer potatoes are a great alternative to traditionally fried potatoes because they use much less oil and have zero trans fat. Compared to traditionally fried potatoes that have tons of trans fats and are made with highly processed vegetable oil.

Some people confuse potatoes and assume they’re unhealthy. They are not unhealthy at all. They’re just high in natural carbohydrates and sugars. People who are trying to loose weight, eat low carb or keto avoid potatoes due to their high carb count.

Red potatoes are also high in potassium and are known to help regulate blood pressure.

No, unfortunately these air fryer red potatoes aren’t keto friendly because they aren’t low carb. Red potatoes have 16 grams of carbohydrates in just 100 grams! They’re pure carbs!

I never have any leftovers of these potatoes but if you do here’s how to store them:

  1. Allow the potatoes to cool: After cooking the air fryer red potatoes, allow them to cool down to room temperature before storing them. This will help prevent condensation and moisture buildup, which can lead to sogginess.
  2. Store in an airtight container: Transfer the cooked potatoes to an airtight container with a lid. Ensure the container is clean and dry before placing the potatoes inside. A plastic or glass container with a tight seal works well for this purpose.
  3. Refrigerate promptly: Place the airtight container with the potatoes in the refrigerator as soon as possible. Refrigeration helps inhibit bacterial growth and maintains the potatoes’ freshness. Make sure your refrigerator is set to a temperature below 40°F (4°C) to prevent spoilage.
  4. Separate from other foods: If storing other food items in the same refrigerator compartment, try to keep the air fryer red potatoes separate to prevent the transfer of flavors or odors.

There are a few ways that you can successfully reheat these air fryer red skin potatoes. Here are instructions on how to reheat them in the microwave, stovetop, air fryer and regular oven.

How to Reheat Air Fryer Red Skinned Potatoes in the Microwave:

While you can reheat air fryer potatoes in the microwave, I don’t recommend it. Because the microwave will warm them up but they’ll get soggy.

The best type of reheating method uses dry heat to help dry out the potatoes and make them crispy again. That way they’ll taste like they’re freshly cooked instead of frozen.

But sometimes the microwave is all you have so here’s how to do it…

  1. Place the potatoes in a microwave safe dish. If they look dry coat them with a teaspoon of oil and pinch of salt.
  2. Put the dish in the microwave and turn it on for 1 minute. After a minute is up stir the potatoes and continue to heat them up at 30 second intervals until you’ve reached the desired level of warmth.

  1. Turn the air fryer on to 400 degrees. Add a teaspoon of oil to the potatoes and place them in the air fryer basket for 3-4 minutes.

Boil them for 2 minutes and remove them with a spider (slotted spoon). Repeat this process until you’ve boiled all of the potatoes.

If you try to boil all of the potatoes at once the water will not boil. The potatoes are much cooler in temperature than the boiling water.

So the potatoes won’t actually boil they will simmer in cool water until the temperature heats up enough to boil both the water itself and the potatoes.
