Are Pizza Rolls Gluten Free?

Traditionally prepared pizza rolls are not gluten free because they use all purpose wheat flour as the main ingredient for the dough. The rest of the ingredients in pizza rolls are naturally gluten free, including the toppings, like tomato sauce, pepperoni and cheese.

The good news is that it’s possible to make pizza rolls gluten free. So even if you have celiac disease or are on a gluten free diet you can have pizza rolls. Making gluten free pizza rolls is as simple as swapping out the wheat flour for another gluten free flour alternative.

Keep in mind that a pizza roll made with gluten free pizza crust may become crumbly making it hard to roll out. So for this recipe I added 1 egg to the dough to help keep the dough together.

If you use gluten free all purpose flour and 1 egg in place of all purpose flour in a traditional pizza crust recipe you can make gluten free pizza rolls.

Everyone knows I’m a minimalist in the kitchen. So I always try to use as few specialty equipment items as possible. I like this gluten free pizza roll recipe because you don’t need anything fancy. Of course, you can cook these pizza rolls in an air fryer if you want to, but they’ll come out just fine in your oven.

I can almost guarantee that you already have all of this equipment in your kitchen, but here is what you’ll need. I’ll also include some alternatives incase you’re missing a pizza cutter or parchment paper.

Equipment Substitutions

  • If you don’t have parchment paper you can use plastic wrap.
  • No Rolling Pin? Flatten the crust with your hands.
  • If you don’t have a pizza cutter, a knife dipped in hot water, or a dough cutter will work.

Gluten Free Pizza Roll Recipe Ingredient Substitutions

  • Agave: Instead of agave you can use honey or regular sugar.
  • Olive Oil: Instead of olive oil you can use coconut oil or safflower oil.
  • Dried Oregano: If you don’t have dried oregano you can use dried parsley or an Italian seasoning blend.

How to Make the Gluten-Free Pizza Dough

Quick Answer: You can make gluten free pizza dough the same way you would normally make regular dough. Using the ratio 65% of water to the amount of flour with 4% sugar, 2% yeast and 2% salt. Just swap out the regular all purpose flour for a gluten free blend and add 1 egg per 2-2 1/2 cups of regular flour.

It’s easy to make gluten free pizza dough! You would make it the same way you would regular dough. Just swap out the regular all purpose flour for an all purpose gluten free flour blend.

The only thing I like to add to my gluten free pizza dough is an egg. Since the dough doesn’t have any gluten in it, it is more crumbly and falls apart more easily than pizza dough made with regular flour.

I first tried to make this recipe without an egg but the dough was crumbling and too hard to roll out. Once I added 1 egg to the mixture it rolled out just as smoothly as regular pizza dough!

How to Store Pizza Rolls?

The best way to store left over pizza rolls is to freeze them. If you put them in the fridge, the crust will get soggy. No one likes soggy crust! If you wrap them in plastic wrap and place them in an air tight container or freezer bag, the pizza rolls will last for up to 3 months.

How to Reheat Homemade Gluten Free Pizza Rolls

The best way to reheat homemade pizza rolls is in the oven. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees and place the pizza rolls in an oven safe dish on the middle rack for 20 to 30 minutes. Rotate the pizza rolls half way through the reheating process.

If you’re short on time you can reheat the pizza rolls in the microwave. This is best done if the pizza rolls weren’t frozen. If you microwave frozen pizza rolls then the dough will get soggy.

Can I cook this pizza roll recipe in the air fryer?

Yes! You can make pizza rolls in the air fryer. Lightly grease an air fryer basket. Brush the exterior of the pizza rolls and place them in the air fryer basket. Air fry at 200C/400F for 8-10 minutes, turning halfway through.

What to Serve With Pizza Rolls

The best foods to serve with pizza rolls are gluten free onion rings, gluten free buffalo cauliflower wings, vegetable Crudite and a creamy ranch dip. I prefer vegan ranch made from cashews.

Can you cut pizza rolls with a knife or pizza wheel?

The best way to cut pizza rolls is with a pizza wheel. Make sure to clean the pizza wheel in between cuts because a dirty wheel will not make a clean cut. You can also use a knife.

It’s best to heat up the knife in warm water and coat it with oil to prevent the dough from sticking to the knife. You can press the knife in gently, wiggling it slightly back and forth. Once you break the dough, press the knife straight down for a clean cut. Make sure to clean the knife in between each cutting.
