What Kind of Peppers do Italians Use?

Italians use a variety of peppers in Italian cuisine, but the most commonly used are sweet bell peppers, which come in a range of colors, including red, yellow, and orange. Italians commonly refer to bell peppers as Peperoni.

You can also use other types of sweet peppers, such as Cubanelle or Italian frying peppers, which have thinner skins and are sweeter than bell peppers.

In addition to sweet bell peppers Italians commonly use small sweet peppers called Peperoncini. Peperoncini refers to about 85 different types of bell peppers.

Are Italian Roasted Peppers Hot?

No, Italian roasted peppers are not hot. They are made from sweet peppers that have been roasted until they are soft and tender, and their skins are charred and blistered.

Roasting peppers brings out their natural sweetness and eliminates any heat they may have had. When combined with Italian spices, olive oil and garlic the peppers take on the flavors of a nice herby dressing as well.

Do You Have to Peel the Skin Off Roasted Peppers?

Technically yes you do need to peel the skin off of roasted peppers. The skin on roasted peppers is burnt and charred. The skin can be tough and chewy with a bitter taste.

Eating burnt food is linked to a higher risk of “ovarian, kidney and endometrial cancer due to its increased levels of acrylamide, a chemical the WHO listed as a “possible” risk to human health. The International Agency for Research on Cancer also classifies acrylamide as a “probable human carcinogen’.” According to Runners World.

Peeling the skin off also allows the peppers to absorb more flavor from the seasonings and dressing.

How Do You Roast and Remove Skin from Peppers?

To remove the skin from roasted peppers, follow these simple steps:

  1. After roasting the peppers, let them cool for a few minutes until they are cool enough to handle.
  2. Place the roasted peppers in a plastic bag, paper towels or a covered bowl for 10-15 minutes after roasting. The steam inside the bag or bowl will help loosen the skin, making it easier to remove.
  3. Us a paper towel to rub the peppers. The friction will help remove the skins. Use your fingers to peel of stubborn pieces of skin.
  4. Once you have removed all the skin, cut the peppers into thin strips and mix it with the dressing.

Note: If you’re having trouble removing the skin, you can also place the roasted peppers in a plastic bag or a covered bowl for 10-15 minutes after roasting. The steam inside the bag or bowl will help loosen the skin, making it easier to remove.

There are so many uses for Italian roasted peppers. You can serve the roasted peppers as a cold appetizer salad along side other dishes. If you want to try something different, you can use the peppers to add flavor to other dishes.
