What is Tiramisu

Tiramisu is a dessert that was invented in the 1960’s as an afternoon pick me up. It’s made with layered lady fingers soaked in coffee and liquor, whipped cream mixed with eggs and mascarpone cheese and chocolate.

Some recipes don’t use egg or swap the lady fingers for another type of cake like Black Forest cake.

Can You Make Tiramisu Ahead of Time?

Yes Tiramisu should be made at least 6 hours ahead of time so that the tiramisu ingredients have time to meld. If you serve tiramisu right away the lady finger layer won’t have enough time to absorb the liquid from the other layers and get soft.

Even though I like to make these tiramisu dessert cups ahead of time I always add a fresh dollop of vegan whipped cream and a fresh cherry on top to make them look their best.

You can make tiramisu up to 2 days ahead of time since they will stay fresh in an air tight container in the fridge.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Ager Powder: If you don’t have agar powder you can use gelatin. Or you can leave it out and just know that your Cherry filling will be more runny. Bit not to worry! It will still be delicious!
  • Cherries: If you don’t have fresh cherries frozen cherries work great. Cherry jelly also works!
  • Coconut whipping cream: You can use vegan whipped cream or heavy whipping cream if you don’t have a dairy allergy.

Can You Freeze Cherry Tiramisu

You can only freeze cherry tiramisu if you don’t use real dairy. Since this recipe used vegan whipped cream you can freeze it. Dairy cannot freeze well because the texture will change.

Even though you can freeze it I don’t recommend freezing cherry tiramisu dessert cups. This recipe is best enjoyed a few hours after it has been assembled.

Since traditional tiramisu is made with masala wine and rum most store bought tiramisu will have some alcohol in it. It’s usually only a teaspoon or two of alcohol and not enough to make a difference.

keep in mind that tiramisu still tastes great even without the alcohol.

If you want to make a traditional tiramisu recipe then you should add a teaspoon of rum and Marsala wine to the coffee before you dip the lady fingers into it.

Italians eat Tiramisu to honor a 19th century count who tried to unify Italy and failed. Another reason Italians eat tiramisu is because it’s believed to be an aphrodisiac and help men with ED.

I don’t believe that tiramisu is an aphrodisiac but the sweet treat probably puts Italians in a good mood since the alcohol has a relaxing effect while the coffee gives people a pickup.

It’s best to let tiramisu set for 6 to 12 hours after you make it before consuming. If you eat the tiramisu dessert cups right away then it won’t taste as good because the lady fingers need time to absorb all of the flavors and moisture from the cherry filling, espresso and whipped cream.
